AHS IV Next Steps: Toolkit to Engage Youth in Community Action
Following the release of the 2008 Adolescent Health Survey results, we have been busy taking the results back to youth across the province in a variety of ways. Using our Next Steps model we are presenting the findings of the survey to youth in a meaningful way and engaging them in action to improve youth health in their community.
The Next Steps Project is based on resiliency-building strategies.
There are three components to the Next Steps:
A Stand Alone First Workshop
- Youth will discuss the AHS III findings through a lively trivia game and identify the top issues and youth health priorities for their community.
- Youth will explore protective factors and resiliency, and how they relate to their ideas for action.
- Youth will develop ideas for action on youth health issues.
Second Workshop
- Youth will take part in a community mapping exercise -mapping the strengths and resources of their community.
- Youth will participate in skill building, team building and creative thinking exercises.
- Youth will take their youth health action plans to the next level and explore how to connect and involve the wider community.
Community Outreach Project
- Youth will engage the wider community, build relationships and share the results of their Next Steps workshops.
Funding for the Next Steps Project has been provided by:

Government of Canada's National Crime Prevention Strategy.
